Tarab is representative of an era of long-form songs, dynamic orchestral compositions, and some of the most classic musical works of the Arab world. Timeless songs that Raqs Sharqi dancers continue to dance to, interpret and remake.

This Tarab series will focus on a classic song, and the classes will be designed to help dancers work through challenging and dynamic musical compositions, interpret and express lyrics, evolve upper body expression, create nuanced technical execution, all with an emphasis on creating connection. Dancers will walk away with a solid idea of how to work with Tarab song structures, through improvisation, theory, and choreography sections, how to use nuanced technical approaches to create dynamic and diverse expressions, how to use the upper body to express and connect, and how to respect the song’s integrity while still being true to their own expression.
